Getting Results with the Help of Tech
No matter how you go about achieving weight loss, it’s a struggle. Whether you’re trying to go it alone or opt for weight loss surgery, lifestyle changes are essential to achieve lasting results. And one of the most important of these is ensuring you’re getting adequate exercise. Luckily, these days there are many tools to help you stay on track and achieve your fitness goals.
Among these, wearable fitness trackers have grown a great deal in popularity over the last couple years. In fact, according to a survey from 2017, about half of Americans reported using them at least once a day. There are several reasons for this: they’re very effective in tracking important health data such as distance travelled and calories burned, and many models effectively promote accountability by recording progress over time.
The market for these has expanded significantly, so it’s important to consider: what’s the best one? This isn’t an easy to question to answer—people vary in their preferences—but here are five strong candidates.
1. FitBit Charge 3
FitBit is easily the most popular brand of trackers, and the Charge 3 seems like a good model to keep that trend going. Compatible with both Android and iPhone devices, these attractive wearables are lightweight and employ an even larger screen than previous models. They’re able to track things like steps taken and distance travelled, while also monitoring heart rate. When paired with a smartphone, these have GPS. Not only that, they’re completely waterproof. The battery life is also a plus as these can go six days without recharging.
2. Moov Now
When it comes to versatility and bang-for-your buck, the Moov Now is hard to beat. While these wearables don’t monitor heart rate, they differentiate themselves from most other trackers in a number of ways. In addition to tracking steps and distance traveled, they also have a swimming mode, and can be set to rep-based training as well as a unique, boxing function. Like others, you can sync with a smartphone to use GPS, but unlike most of them, the batteries last for an astonishing six months. Significantly cheaper than most other models, these are taking the fitness world by storm; it’s not wonder that Tech Radar named it the top tracker of 2018.
3. Garmin Vivosmart 4
Featuring an attractive, slim design that’s still able to fit in a clear display, the Vivosmart is an excellent choice for those looking to get into exercise. As with others, these track heart rate, steps, and are waterproof, while being able to sync to smartphones. The battery life is usually about a week, though it varies based on how much exercise you’re doing. While these don’t have a GPS feature, they have a unique “body battery” feature that figures out when the best times are for you to work out based on your energy levels.
4. Samsung Gear Fit 2 Pro
In terms of overall design, the Gear Fit 2 Pro certainly sets a high standard, with a great AMOLED display that allows users to clearly see their stats. In addition to features like heart rate and activity tracking, these can be used for swimming and have a built-in GPS, so you can leave your phone at home. While they’re on the higher end in terms of cost, they’re worth every penny.
5. Honor Band 3
If you’re looking for something that’s not going to break the bank while being highly effective, look no further than the Honor Band 3. Like many other models, these track activity, heart rate, and sleep, and can be used for swimming. While the associated app is a little more bare-bones, users love the pleasing design. Notably, this type also has a solid battery-life and is compatible with both iPhones and Android devices.

By understanding your progress—both during the short-term and over time—you’ll be better prepared to keep moving in the right direction.
