FAQs

The following is a list of frequently asked questions. If you have a question that is not on this list, feel free to contact us for additional information. Please note that results vary per patient.

What is bariatric surgery?

Bariatric surgery, also called weight loss surgery, is a type of weight loss procedure that is performed when a person’s health is compromised due to excess weight. Find out more about bariatric surgery here.

Who should have bariatric surgery?

Candidates for weight loss surgery typically have an average BMI (body mass index) of 35 or more. However, Evolve does consider people with lower BMIs if additional health problems, such as diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease exist. To see if you’re a candidate click here or call 888.575.4526.

What bariatric surgery options do you offer?

Evolve offers various procedures for weight loss—some minimally invasive and some major surgeries—including the LAP-BAND® procedure, gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, Duodenal Switch, and revision weight loss surgery. Click here to find out more about each surgery.

What are the risks associated with bariatric surgery?

As with all surgeries, there are risks to think about when undergoing a bariatric procedure. Here is a brief overview:

  • Bowel obstruction/leaking in gastrointestinal system
  • Dumping syndrome, which causes diarrhea, nausea or vomiting
  • Hernias
  • Gallstones
  • Low blood sugar
  • Stomach ulcers
  • Malnutrition
  • Death (although this is rare)

How much weight could I potentially lose after the procedure?

Depending on the type of surgery they get, patients can lose between 50% and 70% of their excess body weight within the first couple of years after having the procedure done. Results will vary.

How long will recovery be?

Recovery time depends on the type of bariatric procedure you have. Minimally invasive surgeries, such as the LAP-BAND®, will have you back to normal life in just days. If you undergo a gastric bypass, however, your recovery time will be longer, as this is considered a major procedure. For further information click here or give us a call at 888.575.4526.

What will I be able to eat post-surgery?

Directly after your bariatric procedure, you will be on a liquid diet; followed by eating pureed foods; then soft, solid foods; and, finally, solid foods. Should you have a bariatric procedure, we will make sure you have all the resources you need to adjust your nutrition plan accordingly.

How will weight loss improve my health?

Bariatric surgery will improve your health in many ways. Besides losing a large percentage of your body weight, you will become a healthier individual. Weight loss surgery has been proven to help reduce or even eliminate conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, GERD, joint pain, back pain, high cholesterol, and more. Find out additional information here.

How will having bariatric surgery change my lifestyle?

Losing weight is the first, most exciting, step after bariatric surgery, but you’re going to have to work hard at keeping yourself healthy with the right nutrition and a good exercise regimen. These are things you must be able to work into your post-bariatric surgery lifestyle.

What should I do to prepare for bariatric surgery?

Should you be a candidate for and decide to undergo bariatric surgery at Evolve, we will give you all of the information you need to prepare for your surgery. Such preparations could include things like food, beverage and medication restrictions; beginning a workout regimen; and stopping tobacco use. We will go over all of this information with you well before your surgery.
