What is GERD?
GERD, or gastro-esophageal reflux disease, occurs when the valve between your stomach and esophagus does not work properly. As a result of this malfunction, stomach contents and acid flows back up into the esophagus. When stomach acid hits the esophagus, it causes a burning sensation known as heartburn in the upper abdomen or near the breastbone.
What Are Symptoms of GERD?
While each patient presents with unique symptoms, almost all GERD patients complain of chronic heartburn. We highly suggest contacting our GERD specialists if you experience any of the below.
- Consistent heartburn happening 2 or more times a week
- Difficulty or pain while swallowing
- Heartburn waking you up from sleep
- Chronic sore throat
- Inflammation in the gums
- Sour taste in your mouth

Nissen Surgery – This outpatient procedure involves the surgeon repairing any hernia you may have, while also wrapping the upper part of the stomach around the base of the esophagus to reinforce your lower esophageal sphincter and resolve heartburn. Because it is minimally invasive, this procedure allows you to return to full activity within a week. In addition, studies have shown that up to 90% of reflux patients treated with the Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication have complete resolution of their GERD related symptoms.
TIF (Incisionless Treatment) – TIF or Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication is a non-invasive procedure performed through the mouth using EsophyX. EsophyX allows the surgeon to manipulate tissue around the esophagus to help reconstruct your weakened tissue. This approach leaves no scars, results in minimal pain, and helps you recover faster.
LINX Surgery – During the LINX procedure, a skilled surgeon places a bracelet of magnetic beads around the esophagus to reinforce the weakened lower esophageal sphincter. This procedure is one of the newer treatments for GERD.
Laparoscopic Hiatal Hernia Repair – Your acid reflux could be caused by a hernia in your upper abdomen. Evolve specializes in outpatient laparoscopic hernia repair to resolve this issue. Learn more about our hernia repair options here.
